Remember that legend of zelda game for n64? was the craze back then, sold millions of copies. How many play it now? RPG's with no new content die quickly. Pvp games last way longer. Perhaps you should not post on topics you dont know much about. You dont see me going into the RP boards preaching about the history of roleplaying do you?

Moral of the story, competition never dies.
Ok, using Zelda N64 is a bad example, that game is over 15 years old. But, those old systems sell well in the used game stores. Parents buy them for their young children. There still are a lot of people even playing the old original nintendo games. But this is semantics, really.

I see your point, you beat a game you move on. And trends in MMO's have shown the same thing. You master any game you lose interest.

I like the idea of UAS simply because it puts everyone on a more even playing field and a pvp'er wants to start up a game and be competitive. But..

The problem is pvp is a niche market. In even the top titles, pvp is relegated to a server of a part of a server or a faction vs situation. Very few games are a pvp free for all. And they don't have the numbers to stay in business for as long as a game with pve content.

But then again, pvp is a different animal. People want to be able to log in, jump in some fights and have fun. You don't want to spend countless hours grinding to do what you wanted to do from day one.

The only thing I worry about is whether UAS and mastery of the game here will follow the same trends as every other game. But I know a pvp'er will play forever as long as there is a fight, that competition you mentioned. So I am torn on whether I agree with the concept.

Maybe UAS is too much, but our current unlocking rate is too low. Maybe we should have these weekends once a month. Often enough to make things better, but still enough of a space between each one to make them not get repetative. And these weekends exposed a lot of people to pvp.

*edit* and I like calling one weekend 'these weekends'

James Phinney addresses the rate of unlocking in his interview with IGN on Friday. He says that changes are going to be made to increase the rate you can unlock things. UAS isn't going to happen though folks, not now and not ever. I'm not saying that because I'm against it. I'm simply saying it because it's true.

The PvPX setup is, in my opinion, the best way to go. Faction was supposed to be a substitute for PvE quests for skill and skillpoints. The normal faction setup is so slow that it feels like saving up gold for skills. The 5x faction from this weekend feels more like doing a quest for an unlock.

Instead of "I've been saving up faction for a couple of weeks so I can unlock this elite skill (like saving up gold)," it's been more like, "I need that elite skill, let me go pvp for an hour for the faction (like going off to do a quest)."

Between the hype surrounding the event, and the balance changes, the competition wound up being more interesting and diverse than I have ever had the pleasure of seeing it.

In light of that, complaints about grind don't seem all that important.

Wow.... guys how about you hold off on the complaining until they make more official changes to the faction gain and such instead of flaming about the PvP X weekend? You say ur not, but ur complaining about the grind STILL!

But to stay on topic.... .. i'll say this:

UAS = Not supposed to be needed, but neither is grind, which is why they are having this event in the first place, to REDUCE grind... cause nothing should come too easy in a game.

PvP X Weekend = Testing Time to encourage players to play PvP for more skill testing and faction testing.

Thats exactly what I was going write. 5x fraction sounds about right, it feels like I'm doing quests instead of grinding. Normally it takes me forever to get even one skill lol.

The "Guild Wars is an RPG" thing is no excuse. Why do you pve carebear types want to keep buying the same grindy game over and over and over again? So your game is current with the most recent DirectX version? Guild Wars isn't a game of accumulation. It's a strategy game with RPG elements. Creating new strategies and winning with them is the reward. This is why PVPers want UAS and not faction. We don't care about rewards. We want to win by outplaying or outthinking the opposition.

Stop trying to pretend Guild Wars is Everquest with no monthly fee. It isn't.

The faction improvements were welcome. Leaving them at that level constantly would be a marked improvement.
